Sanctuary of Silence - Uto Island, Finland
The project transforms an existing WWI bunker into a sanctuary of peace. An interior is focused around a single opening which looks out to the Baltic sea, while the exterior builds upon an existing entrance and draws one’s attention upward. Whereas one space frames the seascape to emphasize a view out to the horizon, the other obscures the horizon and focuses up to frame the sky. Both spaces serve as a meditative space within which one can engage the extreme and unique site. Published in Arkkitehti, February 2009. Design & Construction: Jaipal Singh & Kentaro Negano.
